PCB assembly, or PCBA, is the final step in a multi-step process that transforms a bare circuit board into a complete electronic device. This is the stage where electrical components are soldered onto the board and the entire assembly is completed, or brought up to production standards.

Before a circuit board can be soldered and assembled, it needs to go through a number of processes called PCB fabrication that lay the foundation for the circuit. PCB fabrication begins with creating the bare circuit board through steps like layering and etching, which are both key to building functional electronics. The first step of this process is known as photoengraving, or laying out the blueprint for the circuit board on the copper-clad substrate material. This can be done by either applying a patterned photoresist to the material or by chemically etching it, which reveals the pattern of holes that will later be used for mounting electrical components.

This is followed by a process of drilling, wherein precision holes are made to accommodate the leads for these components. The remaining copper is then etched away, which leaves behind the needed copper tracks to connect the layers of the board together. The drilled holes are then capped with solder, which carries the electrical signals from one side of the board to the other.

Once the bare board has been fully fabricated, it is ready for the final phase of its development, which is called pcb assembly and manufacturing. This is where the bare board will be transformed into a functional electronic device, and this can be accomplished through a series of actions including solder paste printing, pick and place, and reflow soldering.

This can be a manual process, wherein the designers look at each individual component for proper placement. However, this can be time-consuming and impractical for larger batches of circuit boards, particularly because looking at small components for an extended period of time can result in optical fatigue.

After the printed circuit board has been inspected, it can then be ready for the next phase of its development, which is called surface mount technology or SMT, wherein sensitive components such as resistors and diodes are mounted onto the bare circuit board with an SMT machine.

To become a skilled PCB assembler, you need to have at least a high school diploma or GED certificate along with some additional training in high-tech manufacturing.
